Yes, it's party time! Open house weekend!! Doing my happy dance and getting the studio ready for visitors. This is the one time a year I open my studio and invite my friends, family and customers in. Wet Rainy Fridays always get me down

Especially when the radio keeps going out. I was going to blog about my office again today, but the going is slow. So I'm going to talk about organization. You can't create if you don't know where things are. You get an idea and before you know it you're sidetracked on finding that thing you needed and then you find something else and put it away and oh yeah, what was I doing?

Right now I'm going through piles of beads and leftover wire, organizing and putting them away in their rightful spots. I do have an incredibly organized bead system. I bought a fabulous shallow drawer cabinet from Ikea and several small bit screw/nail/bolt organizers from Kmart. My glass beads are in the drawers and the organizers from Kmart hold my semi-precious beads and some unique seed beads, the rest going into smaller boxes sorted by size that i got at Walmart. My findings are organized into boxes from Harbor Freight and sit in a plastic drawer setup that you can find in almost any store - Staples, Walmart, Kmart, etc. My precious metals are locked up in a safe - well, no, not really but I should. They are actually sorted in plastic sleeves in a 3 ring binder - no lie, it works. Copper goes into a plastic hanging file folder bin because there's a lot more of that, and the silver/gold filled just won't fit in there. Tools are on this nifty little recycled thingy that my husband made for me - he took a couple of leftover things that wire came on at his job, soldered them together and I place it on a lazy susan and organize all my tools/pliers/hammers and anything else I can hang off of it. Its taken years but everything has a place.

One of the neatest things I have ever received to organize projects is a fabric/quilted roll up with plastic baggies inside and each project gets its own baggie. It's held up rather well for several years now, much to my surprise. I received it as part of a birthday package when I was doing Swap-bot. I miss the days of swap-bot - look it up on swap-bot.com. It's kind of difficulty to explain, but crafty/arty people seek to swap things through the mail from all over the world. There are swaps for even non arty things like Tea Swaps - flattened penny swaps (i have quite the collection) - napkin swaps (for those of us who like to collect pretty patterned things) - and even photo swaps.

Oh Hi!! Welcome to my blog -

Today and tomorrow I am participating in a "Link Love" event sponsored by Cabbing Rough, and online vendor of cabochons (lovely hand cut cabochons by the way.) So I just wanted to welcome you all to my blog. Here I post on such things as my jewelry, fashion trends, events coming up and occasionally just on things that are on my mind as a wife, mom, artist, music lover, physical therapist - anything really that I find interesting. My hope is that you may find something on my blog interesting and subscribe. My real hope is that you feel a need to post and discuss and that I can get to know some new people through this fascinating medium.

Display Dilemma

Yesterday at my show I noticed something. I have a problem. I have an overwhelming need to put everything i have ever made out at a show. Because here's the thing. I hardly ever make the same thing twice, and if I do use the same pattern, I tweak it here or there or do an entirely different color palette. So, here I am, the seller/vendor/artist thinking about my customer, and what if said customer comes to my booth and wants something similar to what I have made, but in a different color/size/stone/metal, or wants a particular stone that I chose not to put out that day but they are too shy/busy, or distracted by their 3 year old that they don't ask me if I happen to have it in this or that style/color/metal, etc?

Now yesterday was really freaky because I sold two things that have been in my inventory for literally - YEARS. But being very well made and still stylish and lovely, they sold.

So what would have happened had I not put them out? Would I be out $140? or would those customers simply have found something else to their liking? And how many customers simply gave up in my booth because of too many choices and being overwhelmed. Did I lose sales or gain them because of this problem?

Here's the thing, I am going to be put to the test in the Spring. I am doing a show where I will be limited to one 8 foot table. ONE EIGHT FOOT TABLE!! And I am scared. I am scared that I will overclutter it, or that I will not have something out and no one will ask. But I have three days at this show in which to experiment.

So I think I will do this, I will start out with a lot on the table, and slowly through the day, like once every 15 minutes, I will take something off the table. Slowly wean myself to a very elegant, streamlined vision of my work.

I will trust that my customers find me approachable and friendly, and will discuss my work with me and be able to very simply find out if I have something they are looking for - and just in case - I will put up lovely little signs that say - "Just ask - I might have it, and if I don't, I might be able to tell you where to get it" or more simply - "Just ask." (and by the way - had to look up Dilemma to check the spelling - and funny, I always thought it had an "n" but it doesn't.)

Oh, it was a beautiful day at Landis Woods! Thanks to all who trekked out and enjoyed the show. It was a bit dicey last night, the rain was relentless, but it dried out today and left us little worse for wear - My daughter even won second place for one of her paintings!!

Second - two shows coming up. First is Heart of Lancaster Arts And Craft Show with a big emphasis on ART this year as well as Craft. The dates are September 3rd and 4th - that's Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. There are a lot of new vendors this year and we are really looking forward to a great show. I will be demonstrating Viking knit again this year so if you want to learn how to do it - come to my booth at 10, 12 and 2 each day. The show is at Roots Country Farm Market in Manheim. I'm going to have a big sale going on. Hoping to clear out some old designs to make room for some new designs. Okay, time to get back to work. I have a show at the beginning of September and need to get back in gear. She is monstrously talented, if I had known how quickly she could do this, I would have paid her less.

This one is in sterling silver but they can be made in sterling, gold fill, copper or many color coated copper colors. They can signify family members, colors you like or colors that inspire you. I am reinstating Chai time. I have been far to busy the past few weeks for my liking. No time for jewelry! So this morning, what am I doing? Getting organized from last year for taxes. Every year I promise not to do this to myself, and every year it happens again. I am just not the one to take care of details like my receipts so I drive myself crazy every March. The thing is, I procrastinate like crazy, but in reality, it only takes about two hours to get everything added up once i have it all in one place. You would think I could figure out how to do it in just few minutes a day or week and have it all done come January!

This year I am also on the Conestoga Valley Post Prom Committee and have been busy designing things for that. I can not be any more specific under penalty of death. Stay tuned also for my next entry into Bead the Muse - almost wrote Bed the Muse - that would be something very different, especially for those of you who know who my muses are . . . I'll just post a pic or two and you can go from there . . .

Busy Busy Busy

At this rate I'll never get my new jewelry posted, life just keeps getting in the way! I have 3 projects just sitting on my bench that need to be fixed - not my work, but someone elses that didn't go well. Quality findings, people, quality findings. And stringing materials gone wrong! And tiny wrists not taken into consideration! That's why you need someone like me to custom make your jewelry with quality findings, the right stringing material for the right job, the right tension and the right size! After this I hope to be able to get back to wire and beads baby, my creativity is burning a hole in my brain. On another note, went to see New Moon last night, the second movie in the Twilight Trilogy. Can you tell me why someone would pick skinny, pasty, sparkly oversensitive Edward over buff, bronze and downright sexy Jacob? Just my opinion here. Besides the fact that one can control their anger better than an innate thirst for blood I think. Damn that boy was hot! And I think they should have left his hair long, though I like it short too. That guy is gonna grow up to be one of my muses I think, he's a little young yet but in a few years will join the ranks of Kevin Smith (Aries from Xena), Hugh Jackman, Keanu Reeves (okay, so he's skinny, pasty and white, too) and Kevin Bacon.

Time to get busy

Okay, time to get back to work and get busy. I have new photos of jewelry to post and will get up on my shophomemade.com site. I have plenty of materials to make new stuff and of course lots of projects started. I also have some commissions coming up, a wedding and some other pieces I have been asked to do. It's a slow start to the year, my office is still in disarray since the holidays, was hoping to clean it up some today but was totally unmotivated. How's this for a dillemna? - want to work on new jewelry but workbench is a mess, but unmotivated to clean it up. Time to start the flylady timer and do 15 minutes at a time, I can do that, right? Oh, and wanted to add the complete Use the Muse contest entry, I didn't win, or even place, but I stretched my imagination and love this design!!

My Beading Goals for 2010

My beading goals this year are to develop new and interesting designs both with my beading and my wirework, concentrate on more One of a Kind designs and pursue a more art inspired direction in my work. My art pieces may not sell often, but when they do and are purchased by someone who is either really inspired or really appreciates the work that went into it, it makes it all worthwhile. In pursuing this I hope to get invited to shows that will really get my work out there and noticed. Preferably by some celebrity with lots of money that will pay me to design jewelry for such events as the Grammys, Golden Globes and the Oscars - Kate Hudson are you watching??

New Pictures

Finally have some new pictures to upload of some of the work I've been doing.

First - a new studio set up which has since been changed:

I decided that I didn't have enough room to move around so I switched the white storage unit to in front of the other wall of windows and swung the desk around 180 degrees but am going to swing it back 90 so the back of my desk totally faces the room.

This next piece is a wire wrapped dichroic pendant with a herringbone spiral strap. The strap had been laying around for a couple of years waiting for a centerpiece, this worked out well. Who says I never finish anything?? Sometimes it's just not ready to be finished!

Two views of a swirl wire earring with a post for those of you who like that rather than the kidney wire drop style. A lovely hammered finish applied cause I, well, I like hitting things with a hammer! Available with almost any swarovski crystal accent, in gold filled, sterling silver or copper. I'm sure I could make these out of the artistic wire if you're so inclined as well in any other color, not sure if I can hammer that, will have to experiment and see.

Open House Time

It's that time of year again, yes, I'm cleaning the studio and getting ready for my open house. Not only do I have to clean the studio but I also have to get the back walkway in order and pull all the thistle. It's been a busy fall so far, and I don't expect things to change any time soon. Watch for my entry to Use the Muse III in a couple of weeks. I can't post anything yet but I am really proud of myself for my entry. It really stretched the imagination and I can't wait to wear it. I think I may need some chai tonight, the chill is in the air and it's only 6:45 and already it's getting dark. I love fall with all the coppery colors and you will see them reflected in the copper pieces I have been inspired to make lately. I bought all this copper wire because it was cheap but the jewelry keeps turning out so lovely, I just love it!! I've even experimented with applying a little fire to it and the colors are amazing.

Hey! Sorry I've been gone so long. September is a busy month for me. I was at Roots the beginning of the month and last week at Landis Woods for their art show. Again a wonderful day and not much rain except toward the end. Last year was a real wash-out with a big mud puddle under my chair!!

Notes from the bench

Making some funky earrings today and ordered some more colored wire to make some other jewelry. Drinking chai and trying to work but this has been one weird week. Lost Ed McMahon, David Carridine, Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. As we get older I suppose death becomes a more frequent and real thing as we lose our idols. I, for one, was never really "into" any of the aforementioned yet I feel their deaths as if personal and offer my condolences to all the families involved. It's a sad thing to lose a family member and I guess after losing my grandmother just a couple of months ago it hits closer to home than usual. My immediate and extended family has also had to deal with illnesses, deaths, job losses, injuries and so many other things lately and I am so grateful to have such support on both sides of the family - mine and my husband's. Of course we've also had good things and are looking forward to two new additions as well. Such is the circle of life . . .

Blogging on my weight loss

Just a bit of blogging on my weight loss. I started out in 2004 at 247 and am now down to 182, I had been down to 175 in 2006 but then gained back. This time I'm working out and wanted to post some pictures.

Even though I was 175 in the photo of me at easter in the pink sweater and skirt, I was not working out. My face and body are much more toned now in the bottom two pictures.

In the Green outfit in April I was down to around 190 and now I'm down around 182. It's coming off really slow this time but I know I'm gaining muscle.

Friday Morning Chai

Good morning. I love sitting here at my desk sipping my Friday Morning Chai - well, it's Oregon Chai but since I can't get it at Wawa anymore (hint, hint) I have to make my own. So much to tell, where to begin??
Tonight I will finally get my First Friday Showing at Salon Fin - long awaited since my sudden and serious bout with pneumonia last December that landed me in the hospital for almost a week. Festivities start around 5 PM.
Salon Fin is located at Frederick and Mary Sts. in Lancaster, PA nearby to F&M College.

Can't make it? Then come find me Saturday at Hospital Day in the Park in Ephrata. The show starts at 8AM - bring your own Chai. I'm thinking I'm not going to get to set up today because of the weather (hey-it's OLD 97s on XPN - yayay!! sorry, distracted) so I'll be starting out real early tomorrow morning.

New jewelry! Check this out - made a pendant for my mom and people are asking questions - what is it and how do I get one? This is a tree of life pendant which depicts my mother's children and grandchildren in the branches. The mother's birthstone surrounds the children's. So that's me, the emerald between the amethyst and my kids are the crystal between the emeralds -get it?? This can be done a number of ways - with children's birthstone color between the mother's or both the parents, can be in silver, gold, or a mix, or even copper come to think of it. Price is $50 for copper, $60 for silver and $65 for gold filled or a mix of gold and siver. Mix of silver and copper would be at the $60 silver price. There can be up to 10 branches, with the option of having dangles put on for additional grandchildren - kind of like apples hanging from the tree! The crystals are all swarovski and I have information for what colors go with which birth months. Don't have a lot of children? I only have two but you can do the two branches with your children and leave the rest blank for the future, adding drops with your grandchildren as they come along. Or use drops to signify your nieces and nephews.

Options include putting the Grandmother's/Grandfather's or Mother's/Father's stone color in the roots as well. You can use the tree to signify people in your family, the season of the year or design your own tree to signify healing, strength or the journey of your life. The tree of life is an ancient design used for many purposes.

According to wikipedia - The concept of a many-branched tree illustrating the idea that all life on earth is related has been used in science, religion, philosophy, mythology and other areas. A tree of life is variously, a) a mystical concept alluding to the interconnectedness of all life on our planet, b) a metaphor for common descent in the evolutionary sense, and c) a motif in various world theologies, mythologies and philosophies.

Design your own - have fun! The tree can be just a beautiful using a combined wire motif without any crystals - or choose your own natural stones to be used. I have available a number of different semiprecious stones you can choose from in chips, rounds and other shapes.

Day after my 43rd birthday. It's been a long busy week bookended by long busy weekends. I'm tired, been working out every day but hardly had time to make jewelry. So much to do, so little time. Next show is the Ephrata Hospital Auxilliary Craft Show June 6th. I'll have my best bud Ian helping again, he had such a great time in Elizabethtown. Sorry I've been away, I've been so busy these past few Fridays. I did get to see the Bacon Brothers, the following Friday I had classes down in Philadelphia and learned how to make a new bracelet and a pendant, then had to get ready for a show last Friday and today I'm getting ready to take some jewelry down to Salon Fin on the corner of Frederick and Mary. I will be displaying my jewelry there in between shows. There is talk of a First Friday event on June 5th and on June 6th I'll be in Ephrata at Ephrata Hospital's Festival and craft show. Most of the summer I'll be idle until Labor Day weekend when I'll do the Roots Craft show on Saturday, then the Landis Woods Art Show the last Saturday of the month. Other than those shows, I will be planning my open house for November. The show I do in Philadelphia at the Unitarian Church has been cancelled this year. So very sad as my Father and I do that show together every year and it's so nice to spend time with him and his friends.

I recently designed a Mother's Tree of Life Pendant based on many of the Tree of Life pendants I have seen, using birthstone colors in swarovski crystals to signify each child and grandchild for my mom. I'm thinking of making these on a per order basis but haven't decided on a price yet for them. I also have not yet decided what kind of cord to use as the necklace part.

Tribute to Grandmom

I was blessed to have my Grandmom until this past Sunday, when she passed away. She was pretty healthy up until the past few weeks, lived and died at home. She was an active woman who volunteered at the St. Anne's Senior center helping the "old People." When I asked how old the old people were to her, she would only laugh. She was just shy of 94 years old. She lived through the depression, had 8 children, many grandchildren and a boatload of greats. She remembered everyone on their birthdays and was loved by all. She accepted everyone as they were, never judging, always loving. I am sharing some photos of her today from her 84th birthday party, I doubt that many of my family has even seen these photos but this is how I like to remember her, active, healthy and entertaining all. She always smiled, laughed, and told it just like it was. Her funeral was sad only for us who will miss her. She had a good life and as good a death I'm told as she could.

This is most of the clan, it was really difficult to get everyone to stand still even for a moment.

Nuff said. I'm in the office working on taxes today. I hate this day but my appointment with the accountant is tomorrow and it absolutely must be done. I have most of my receipts together, must log and then do math. Math. I hate math. It can explain so much about the world but the actual thinking of it. Thank goodness for calculators and the giant one my hubby bought me last year. okay, enough dawdling. There will be no good jewelry pics today, just my whining. Will get back to the fun stuff after this weekend.

Oh, this has taken too long to figure out my camera, find the wand that attaches to my tripod, and get things working. But I think the results speak for themselves. Okay, I admit it, Facebook has me. The ability to reconnect with people I know or used to know has me mesmerized. I am compelled to look at every picture, every update and check in several times a day. So far I have found: a cousin who is #3 in the world mixed martial arts championships, a cousin whose name is not what I thought it was for 42 years, an old high school acquaintance who apparently married my 3rd grade boyfriend, my coworker who hates to shop at Walmart on Saturdays, my niece does not like to do her english homework, videos of my nieces dancing, no one who can follow a Logan's Run reference, a new way to connect with my best friend who lives near D.C., the boy who gave me my first "real" kiss, my kindergarten crush, and the bad stuff, divorces, illnesses, deaths of former classmates.

So, in a nutshell, that's why you don't see any new jewelry. And, the jewelry muse has other things to do than grace my studio, or maybe she's waiting for me to cross the room to my workbench. I did start a piece the other night, was trying to make a more affordable line for this declining economy, but the piece got away from me and turned into a monstrosity of ocean jasper, aventurine and poppy jasper. Keep your eyes on me folks, it's coming, it's just taking its time.

It's been a while, January was a blur of catching up from being sick in December. We had repairs to our heating system, the house blessing, doctor appts, dentist appts . . . oh the list goes on. So here we are in February and my goals are this.
1. Get ready to have my taxes done - oh and I started off so well last year, but really dropped the ball after June. Time to play catch up.
2. Get my web sites updated and photos of all my jewelry.
3. Finish at least one piece of the five pieces of jewelry I have started.

Can't sit here chatting, must get to work!!

What I learned in the Hospital

1. The call button is not a microphone

2. Disconnecting your EKG leads and playing dead is not funny to the nurses

3. Changing around the lead wires on the EKG can not make the readout say "Merry Christmas" or anything else.

4. Don't push your own IV pump buttons, alarms WILL go off.

5. There are no Dr. McDreamys, McSteamys or McHunks, there are only McChunkies, McNuggets and McMuffins.

6. Doctors don't really like it when the patient talks during surgery or wakes up and grabs the anesthesiologist by the throat (true stories).

7. The phone will always be where you or your IV or Oxygen tubing will not reach when it rings.

8. You will always realize that you forgot to put on your robe just after your nurse hooks up your IV.

9. The hospitals, doctors and nurses do not have scanners like on Star Trek to instantly diagnose and cure you so stop asking them.

10. Oxygen masks do not make you sound like Darth Vader or Mickey mouse.

11. A white robe does not make you a doctor and you can't write prescriptions or tell the other patients what to do.

12. Wii does not make an incentive spirometer but they should (this is just a suggestion).

13. Nurse Ratchett does not work here so stop asking for her.

14. Orderlies are not your personal cabana boys and they don't give massages.

15. The pool in the hospital is only for physical therapy and there is no poolside concierge.

16. There is no room service so stop calling the operator and asking for it.

New Year! New ME!

Welcome to the new year. I am now somewhat recovered from pneumonia, back to work anyway. Trying desperately to balance activity vs. rest - not easy for someone like me who is always on the go. My plans for the new year include losing 30 lbs that I put back on last year. Overall, I'm still down 40 lbs from my high, but I'm not letting it get that far again. Me and Oprah! So I have been working out with Jillian Michaels, okay, only via wii but that gets me sweating, muscles sore, etc. I'm up to 30 min on medium, from starting Dec. 27 at 10 min on light. Haven't made much jewelry lately, matter of fact my open house is STILL set up. I am offering 20% off the non-woven jewelry until it gets taken down, and it won't get taken down until all the jewelry is photographed. I am starting that this afternoon.

In addition to working out, in an effort to get healthy, I have made my yearly gyno appointment - Have You? I also made appointments for my kids to get their teeth cleaned and my eyes to get checked. This will also lead, I am sure, to my first mammogram. Gotta take care of "the girls."

My best to all of you in this new year. Pay off your credit cards, take care of your health and do all those things you need to do to be the best you!

Pneumonia??? Give me a break

So, here I am, after having spent a week in the hospital with pneumonia. I had been so proud of how I have reorganized my life, made more time for relaxation, and generally found my balance and WHACK I get hit with pneumonia. I was in the ICU for pete's sake. Geeze, what a lightweight I keep thinking to myself. But this just goes to show you, pneumonia can attact no matter your health or fitness level. I was not run down, I eat well, I'm active and yet, I got sick. This post is a warning, wash your hands, use hand sanitizer and stay healthy. I have to say, I received great care in the hospital, had wonderful nurses and doctors and am recovering quickly. So this week, as soon as I start feeling better, I've got jewelry to work on. I missed my big gallery first friday opening which is really disappointing, but hey, life happens. Take care everyone out there.

I'm always amazed when I get all my jewelry out how much I have really made. I will be concentrating more on the art pieces for a while this winter, which is what I really like to do every winter. Here's a really quick peek at what I have in store for this weekend. As a special to my blog readers, get an extra 10% savings on all non-woven pieces if you leave me a comment on this blog. When you come to the open house, mention it - I'll check and if you have the the comment I'll take 10% off your purchase. If you have the postcard too, that's worth another 10% off. Baking Cookies and Treats

Yes, that is how I spent my day, besides cleaning and getting ready for next weekend's Open House! See the details in my last blog post. For those of you who come for the goodies, I made some really tasty pecan bits, chai cookies, kourabiethes and will make an apple-ginger cake next week closer to d-day. Also, the Winter Berry wine is out again and will be serving Friday evening for the Wine and Cheese portion of the event. Everyone is welcome.

Thanks to my recent reorganization of my life, and implementing some cleaning routines, I am relaxed and on top of things as I plan for my open house. The house is getting cleaner day by day. As those of you who know me, know, my house barely qualified as clean. It was cluttered and it was dusty. There were no bugs inhabiting the corners, but it wasn't real pretty. Now, if you ignore the boxes packed and ready to go to goodwill which WILL be gone this weekend, things are coming together. I have flylady.net to thank. My life is much less stressfull as I prepare to welcome people into my home. If the weather clears, I hope to have a penguin to greet you at the door to the studio. I do not work for flylady, just a satisfied participant. We creative types sometimes have difficulty managing our homes as we get "sidetracked" rather easily. Example: I needed to go to the bathroom (simple enough right) so I stop to get the bucket of dirty water from my office so I can dump it down the toilet, notice that I didn't finish cleaning the floor, so I finish vacuuming, then washing floor with swiffer sweeper, notice the sliding glass doors need a polish so I do that, now I really have to go - start off for the bathroom, remember the bucket and go back for it . . . sound like you? Cluttered house? Overwhelmed by taking care of your home to the point you don't know where to start so you do nothing? Welcome to my world for the past 18 years. Never realized the power of routines. Never realized that the born organizeds of the world used them, just thought they were "lucky" or "smarter" than me or that they had no lives.

I will be visiting Pam tomorrow at our group show in Mt. Joy, she has some really great crafters participating. I got a sneak preview!

Today is my favorite holiday of the year but I won't get to celebrate in my traditional way. First, I haven't decorated the house this year, and the neighborhood kiddies are sure to be disappointed, but I am going to be setting up tonight for a show in Philadelphia and won't be home to run the fog machine. That's right, I'm so halloween crazy that I have my own fog machine. So, if you are going to be in the Philadelphia area this weekend, here are the stats:

In other news, my credit card program is up and working, my internet continues to be fast, and my son is going to be Ironman for halloween. I have continued working with flylady.net to get my house in order, the big project this week was cleaning out the "storage" closet in my daughter's room that has our extra quilts and blankets. I also got new curtains for the bathroom and our bedroom and put the nice quilt on our bed with the fancy pillow shams. Everything matches. And today, my boss at my home care job gave us really nice throws to celebrate National PT month. Yay for all the physical therapists who work so hard out there! We have a great group of very dedicated clinicians.

I Have Joined the 21st Century

I now have broadband. It's very exciting after being on dial-up forever. Things load instantly, but many of you know this already. So I'll get to business. First, my daughter's jewelry for homecoming, lovely victorian design featuring swarovski and vintage window beads in deep red.

Close up of the pendant to the left, pendant and earrings to the right. So pretty, as was my daughter at homecoming (If I do say so myself). The pendant is made from the design in a recent Step by step wire magazine. The necklace itself is my own design, alternating S links with links of orbital chain mail.

So what else is new? My next show is next weekend in Philadelphia at the Unitarian Society of Germantown, 6511 Lincoln Drive. Saturday November 1, 10-4 and Sunday November 2, 12-4. A very nice show featuring some wonderful artisans from Philly and the surrounding areas.

In December my work will be featured at Salon Fin in Lancaster at Frederick and Mary Streets. We are working on doing a First Friday event, but I have not received confirmation of this as of this time.

A quick update on what you may be seeing next season. I for one am always influenced by Hollywood, what I see in the shows and movies that I watch. I have been known to sketch crazily after seeing someone on a show wearing something that inspires me. Past inspirations include, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Videos on CMT, Bones (Bones always wears the coolest necklaces), and most recently the costumes of House of Flying Daggers.

Overall Trends

Lack of Uniformity -- less structure in jewelry designs and clothing as a sense of free-spirit abounds. Flowing fabrics, less-fitted clothing styles, mismatched materials and layers and layers of jewelry.

Importance of a Cause -- the upcoming election, combined with increased global and social awareness, brings many different causes to the forefront. Whether it is clearly spelled out or not, most jewelry and clothing designs have a message behind them.

Hollywood Hype -- the power of celebrity endorsements is bigger than ever as Hollywood continues to set the style scene. The ''as seen on/in'' seems to be one of the most powerful advertising statements.

Alternative Materials -- with a shift away from precious metals, designers are using bright colors and an increased scale to create over-the-top looks in a more economical way.

White is emerging as a neutral color trend and is truly becoming a seasonless color, working well throughout the entire year. Crisp, clean shades of white are seen as chic, cool and classy.

Rich jewel tones such as Imperial Plum, Fandango, and Midnight Sapphire represent luxury and elegance.

The Work at Home Woes

I spent the whole morning, well, almost, devoted to fixing my credit card processing program, AGAIN. Seems li'l ol me on dial up is just not feasible anymore. So, now I'm looking for high speed hook up, wireless or something. Headaches. On the jewelry front, this problem did not give me much time to work on anything new, but I am researching some ideas for my daughter's homecoming attire. She actually asked me this year to make her something. I will be hard at work on that the next two weeks and will post the results.

Wow, so proud of myself. This is really working nicely. I've posted consistently for several weeks, progressed toward trying some different outlets for jewelry, and managed to make something new. I've even continued "flying" and getting my house and office and in effect or maybe as a consequence - my life is more organized and less anxiety ridden.

But that's not why you're tuning in today, you want to know who won the earrings. Well, 8 people signed up and I went to http://www.random.org/ to generate a number from 1-8 for the winner. Tonight you can find me at the DREAMS event featuring entertainment and fashion at The Bird's Nest 10 S. Prince Street from 6-9PM. It is First Friday downtown, there's lots going on and this event is going to feature music, fashion and a little bit of everything for everyone.

I am also participating in a group open house in Mount Joy on November 14th and 15th. Hostess is Pam Barto of Olde World Collectibles. She makes the most amazing soft sculpture Santas. As a former soft sculpture and doll artist (something I hope to pursue again some day) I can attest to her creative and fine stitchery. Each Santa is a work of art. Her address is 215 Birchland Ave and the Hours are Friday 11-7 and Saturday 10-5. Stop by, I plan to do some Christmas shopping there for sure. Fifteen of us are exhibiting at her house and everything is guaranteed hand made as she knows each and every one of us exhibiting.

As the holidays approach, if you've been putting off ordering some special piece of jewelry, order it now. New Booth Set up!!

Okay, got to try out my new booth set up today, and I think it looked really nice. Let me know opinions. And don't forget, only 3 more days to sign up for the monthly blog candy by making comments on this blog by September 30th!!

One of the new things in my booth are plexiglass shelves, held up by glass block. I bought 7 glass blocks, on sale at Home Depot for 2$ each, they were on clearance, weird shape but it worked for me. I bought a big piece of plexiglas, and they don't cut it. Tried to do it myself, but it didn't go well. Note to self - it's not as easy to cut plexiglas as the guy made it out to be. I took it to the local hardware store and they cut it. Note to self - buy it at home depot - it's cheaper, but pay them to cut it at the local hardware store.

Also, used little bowls with nifty electric tealight in it covered with rocks. Looked really cute. Also put tealights behind glass block, really really cute. All in all, had a lot of positive comments on the set up and great sales as well until it started pouring rain. Oh well.

In the center I have a picture frame to protect some of my more valuable items and really show them off. Special items I'm either really proud of or took a lot of time or made of precious metals.

I really like this set up, easier to set up, a cinch to break down (did I mention rain?) and I really think it showcases my work. Let me know if you have any comments, what things you like to see at shows, what kinds of booths attract you and so on. Thanks for looking!!

Tomorrow, I will be out, in the rain all day at Landis Woods in Neffsville. Landis Woods is a lovely little park off 501 and Landis Valley Road. Stop by and see me. And bring chai from Wawa. Lots and lots of hot chai. Dress warm, bring an umbrella and wear sturdy shoes. I'm guessing the ground will be soft. This is a great show, lots of fantastic art and it's a shame that the weather will be less than cooperative.

On a brighter note - - - TADA - - -Finished the previously mentioned fringe necklace which I have so named "Gift from the Sea." Gosh it's beautiful (if I do say so myself.) Well, it's Friday again. We have, as of this writing, 7 entries for the earrings. That's pretty good odds. I wish you all well and thanks for posting. Contest ends September 30th and anyone can enter up to then. I've added a couple of things to my blog, tweaking and changing it around. If I missed putting anything up that I had before, please let me know. It was kinda wonky trying to get it all back together.

Below you can see what I'm working on now - a new fringe necklace called "Gifts from the Sea." It's all done in blues and whites with pearls and Swarovski in blues and crystals for accents. I'm lovin' it. Really pretty. In this picture I have about 2/3 of one more row of embellishment to do and should finish it by next Saturday for the Landis Woods art show. Anyone wanting to see what a finished "branched fringe" necklace looks like can check my web site. This is the third one I've made and if you've never seen one in person, it's because once I finish one, it doesn't stay on the display too long - 1-2 shows and someone snaps them up.

Booth display photos - I am working on a new booth display and it is evolving, let me know what you think . . . which booth would you be most tempted to stop into?

Flylady update. I'm still cleaning out the house. Filled up the van last night for goodwill and we have another van load ready to go. Man, we have a lot of stuff we don't need! And that's just this week, less than 15 minutes a day. Other things I have done this week - cleaned the counter and sink in bathroom, cleaned out the kids and my sock drawers, washed the floor in the kitchen, washed the bottom and back of the toilet, cleaned the stove, and began cleaning out the "craft closet." The work is starting to show. It's so much easier having someone give me an assignment every day. This I can deal with. The house is still a mess, but it's better than it was before. And my favorite flylady saying - a chore done wrong still blesses your home. Wow, you mean it doesn't have to be perfect??? Ths kids are pitching in and learning how to keep things clean. My older one is fussing about it, truth be told, she's very neat - but has too much stuff and won't let go of any of it. My younger one is jumping right in, would rather give away stuff than have to put it away. Go figure.

This is my first Friday update. The plan is that each Friday I will be updating my blog - barring weeks that I'm off Monday and have to work my other J.O.B. on Friday. Even then, I plan on at least planning the update into my day.

Heres the real news - Blog Candy is coming. What is blog candy you ask? Will it make me fat? Inquiring minds want to know!! Blog candy is a free giveaway on a blog. ON some blogs it may indeed be fattening, but on mine, the giveaway will be jewelry, and since my jewelry sometimes has sharp pointy bits, I don't recommend eating it. I am not a BO (born organized) person. Those of you who have been to my house can attest to this, but this web site is helping me to de-clutter, clean and organize my house. I am only on day 4, taking baby steps toward this, but already I have a spotless sink - no really, it's spotless!! The kitchen counter on 3 ft either side is CLEAN and today I polished the stovetop and vacuumed the floor. I still have lots to go, but by taking these baby steps I think I can do this and finally have the home I've dreamed of, still leaving lots of time, more time even for my creative mind to play. Best of all, it's free. It's like instant blog candy for the soul!! Okay folks. Time for me to get serious here. The jewelry thing has been a lot of fun, but now it's time for me to knuckle down, promote, create and overhaul. What this entails is more office time for me. I will be following up on alternative ways to promote my art over the next 6 months. Internet, salons, shows, exhibits, galleries - anyway I can get out there. This includes completely redoing my web site, pictures of new jewelry, and hopefully some fun stuff too. So watch this space. My goal is a weekly update of where I am, where I'm going and how I'm getting there.

September is my busiest month. Which I actually consider starting yesterday. I was at Roots in Lancaster for their annual craft show. It was very hot, sticky, humid but I had a great time as I got to see lots of my friends and customers that I hadn't seen in a long time.

On September 13th I'll be in Hummelstown at the Arts festival. Lovely show, really cool town if you can make it. Show hours are 9:30 AM till 5 PM.

On September 27th I'll be in Lancaster at the Landis Woods Outdoor Art Show in Neffsville. Hours are 9 AM to 5 PM. This is one of my favorite shows to do each year. The park setting is fabulous and the art is amazing. This is a not to miss event.

I'll have a rest after that till November, but I will be busy making jewelry, seeking out venues and cleaning my studio. After all, the open house will happen in November and it's the one time a year you can guarantee the studio is clean. If you stop by any other time, well, you're on your own. I'm not a great housekeeper. Who has the time?

Queen Street Block Party

I will be exhibiting at the Queen Street Block Party in downtown Lancaster, PA on Sunday June 1st 11-5pm. The block party is on the 3oo block of North Queen Street. Not sure exactly where I will be on the block, but it was lots of fun last year despite a slight drizzle and I expect the weather will be much better this year. Stop by and say hi!

Elizabethtown Arts in the Park

Come see me tomorrow, May 10th in Elizabethtown Pennsylvania at their annual Arts in the Park celebration. Consistently this show has high caliber crafters and artists as well as cool stuff for the kids. Last year a local alpaca farmer was there with the alpacas as well as the cool wool sweaters and goods made from their fur. This was one of the highlights for me as i got some pretty cool pictures.

I have some great new jewelry designs, lots of viking knit bracelets in cool colors and some for you men as well. I know you guys are always asking me for jewelry so I made a couple of the bracelets with you in mind. I also have a lot of silver wrapped and forged work for you to oogle. Let me know what you think of the direction I'm taking with my work.

I'm in space number 18 so look for me!

The show runs from 9 AM to 5 PM in the park right in the middle of Elizabethtown, it's free and there will be food available for sale there. It's a lovely park with ample parking across the street.

Frida Kahlo from the eyes of a Jewelry Artist, Physical Therapist and Rheumatoid

My thoughts after viewing the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Philadelphia Art Museum today:

Although Frida bared all in her paintings, one is left with the feeling that she would only allow you to see those parts of her she wishes you to see. There are parts of her kept hidden. She will bare her breasts but never let you see the wasting of her right leg and foot. She allows you to see her innermost secrets, struggles in her relationships, and physical pain but still reserves the deepest part of her. Her sexuality is put on display because that is not what makes her vulnerable. She paints herself crying, unibrowed and mustachioed, but that is not what makes her vulnerable. What makes her most vulnerable is that which is beyond her control. Never once is a visual image of her legs revealed. Always directing attention upward, her hair ornately braided and coiffed. Ears and neck adorned in jewelry. Hands dressed in rings on every finger. Breasts bared, nipples erect but our Frida only rarely depicted from the waist down, shrouded in layers of skirts, pants or a shroud of white. A limp out of view from prying eyes.

My answer to why she painted herself with such a prominent unibrow and mustache in some paintings has nothing to do with wanting to appear masculine. It is the simplest of feminine afflictions. It has to do with what all women see in the mirror each day. Our flaws magnified when we are sad, have pain or just feel run down. On good days we are Goddesses, on bad days, merely mortal and sometimes both in the same moment. Perhaps this is the real story of Frida’s work. Her subconscious view of herself on the day she painted, ugly or beautiful and an acceptance of herself. How what she saw in the mirror revealed her mood and level of self confidence on that day, and that day only. In all of us it waxes and wanes day to day, hour to hour, minute to minute. And so, we find Frida. She is real and makes no apologies. Some days she overcomes the pain, some days she is "ugly" with it. Exaggerating her physical attributes as a barometer of her inner demons.

Frida in her paintings becomes every woman, not afraid to experiment, not afraid to reveal her feelings, not afraid to criticize, not afraid to try different things and new mediums. But she still keeps some things to herself.

The new classes may not have been added yet, but they will be soon. Their webmaster, Ginny is really FAST! Well, besides the fact that I was the last teacher scheduled. Thank goodness I'd been thinking of this and planning for my next classes. I will be doing an extended workshop in the fall. I'm still mulling over ideas and getting my act together on that one.

New jewelry

I have just been in love with wire lately and was trying to design something inspired by the Frida Kahlo Exhibit in Philadelphia at the Art Museum that I will be attending this Friday. I am a big big big Frida groupie. Wierd, I know, check out her art though. It is so raw, so real, so inspiring in color and content for me. So, I needed new jewelry. Here are some earrings and a necklace I made. The earrings are so big that I really can't wear them with the necklace so I'm making new earrings that will be a little smaller so that I can wear them together.

Okay, totally self indulgent here - I just wanted to share a couple of pictures of my new kitty Nyssa and my ferret Kyra. First Nyssa, she's a rescue from Castaway Critters, she couldn't have been more than 12 weeks when I got her, she was so tiny, but she's sure growing now. She's definitely a maine coon mix, more maine coon than mix I believe.

Oh my, so much to tell, so little time -

#1 To those who I have told about the Conestoga Valley Community Center Great Escape for Women night on November 10th, I have just been sadly informed that this event has been cancelled.

#2 Now I really don't know what to do about my open house, I will be moving it from the first week of December to either Thanksgiving weekend or the weekend before. Does anyone have a preference? Feel free to post here.

#3 I've been doing some really cool wire work lately, I'm also working on some items that will be available for special order.

#4 If anyone has any November or December events that they know about that would like to have me as a vendor - please let me know. The first weekend in November is taken as I will be in Philadelphia at the Unitarian Society of Germantown's festival of the Arts.

#5 I am now set up to do trunk shows in your home with you and your friends, at your place of business or at bridal salons, fashion boutiques, etc. Call for an appointment. There are rewards for such an arrangement! Does free jewelry interest you?

More workshop from Bernie Berlin

The first is the stencil technique. First problem, didn't really have any stencils. So, I found some mesh, and used that in a couple of colors for the background, then i had a heart stencil that I used on the top. Surprisingly simple and loved the effect of layering the stencils.

Next is the inky papers. Well, I love layering papers. I did a whole cardstock sheet and then cut it up into ATC size. More bang for the buck and i'm all over that. Next with the glazing, i just mixed acrylics in with gel medium. Then some ink and whala! Add some images, stamp some keys, add a few letter and fiber -and you're done. This technique was right up my alley.

Next, the leafing pen resist. I (and my son) tried several different pens. For me, the paint pens, the sharpies and a fiskars pen in metallic did not work. Had to use the leafing pen. But, some of the pens sort of worked and had they been new may have worked better. That being said, I drew some swirls added the watercolor paint and stamped the dragonflies. I loved this. My son who is seven had very good results with this technique too. Cool technique for you AND the kids! what more could you want. My son always wants his cards to look as good as mine and may i say, his (with more vibrant color choices) were really cool.

I will do some more cards like this for sure.

One techie note - it seemed that the resist did not work too well the wetter you get your paper, and i tend to work really wet with watercolors. Note to self, dry off the brush a little!

Painted Paper Towel Examples from Bernie's ATC Workshop

For the paper towel i did both the Lumiere paints and the Watercolor Mists (on different towels, this example is with the mists). The metallic watercolor mists did not have enough color alone to color anything, but it was nice to add a sheen on top. I really liked them on the paper towels because they didn't get as bulky to collage with my gel medium. I brought in some c-fold towels from work and redid the lumiere paints and liked it on those towels a lot better.

For the intuitive watercolor on my last post i used my twinking H2O's just cause they get kinda neglected in a lower corner of a cabinet. So they have a sheen you can't see as well.

ATC Workshop

I am participating in the ATC Workshop based on Bernie Berlin's Book. These are some of the results.

These are "intuitive watercolors." Basically you "find" the picture." I'm not really sure I like them all that much, just not my cuppa tea. I do really like the purple and red lady though.

These are more backgrounds - baby wipes spritzed with watercolor

sprays.

I like these and can't wait to turn them into cards.

Next we have a paper towel painted with lumiere paints, which, by the way, if you're looking for them, i found them at AC Moore with the FABRIC paints and TYE DYE, why the heck they are there, i have no clue!

May ATC Technique
This is the first ATC technique I ever tried. I can’t find the link, so I can’t credit the originator.

Materials needed
Acrylic paint, 3 colors
A playing card for a base
a page from a book, dictionary – any text will do
a rubber stamp - focal image

rubber stamp - background text or script
black pigment ink
a cosmetic sponge

Directions: Smush your acrylic paint on your playing card, lightest to darkest in this manner – lightest in the center, darker on left, darkest on right, don’t clean the sponge in between and don’t worry if the card shows through. Add paint till you’re happy with it. Feel free to blend paint together over each other or whatever. Let dry.
Add a piece of text from the dictionary, book or even a phone book to the left side, angled up toward the right. Use a glue stick or whatever your favorite adhesive is.

Add text to the right side, angled up toward the left

you may want to add a background text stamp here in a subtle color, or maybe a metallic

Ink up your focal stamp and stamp slightly above center and to the right or left
Let dry and add some decorative tissue paper, vellum or napkins work great too.
Add more text if you feel like it needs it.
Embellish with a charm or fiber.
Feel free to experiment and substitute different materials, put the text in a different place, use an image instead of rubber stamping one. Post about your difficulties and successes, your experiments and your ideas. This is a starting place. Have fun.

Pages from an altered book round robin through swap bot. the theme of this book is neverwhere. A place where fantasy meets reality, but my fantasy is reality. This is where my soul lives even though i visit just a few times a year. Cape May, NJ. The two pictures on the left are the left hand page with a pocket for an atc with it in place and removed.

My sil and i went to a stamp show yesterday and picked up some more rubber stamps - like we need them but oh well. We also picked up some new techniques that i am excited to share. Will take me some time to get it all worked out, so stay tuned!

new jewelry

Bead surrounded and encased cabachons with spiral weave strap. These are 3 out of 4 new pieces. My goal this year is to complete 4 new pieces per month. This month's were especially elaborate, with the fourth beaded on leather measuring 4x6 inches (approx.) The strap is not finished. February i plan to do less time intensive but still quite striking strung pieces using ceramic focals.

My latest idea, compliments of a swap-bot swap. I think it's a good idea to make an inspiration box. A box you can put things into that could inspire you in times of idea famine or just to get you thinking "outside" the box. Here's a list of things you could put in it:
foreign coins
vintage or really cool buttons
hand made or textured paper
any kind of fibers,
a couple of pages from a dictionary or paperback
watch parts
an earring that's missing it's mate
vintage photos
vintage or unusual beads
something shiny you found on the street (that's clean, i hope,)
fortune from a fortune cookie,
poem that you found in a book that spoke to you or a copy of your favorite poem
pen in an unusual color or form
pencil with a pattern on it
A photo of your summer vacation, a sunset, a sunrise or a rock that you found interesting
A story from your newspaper
dried flower or some seeds
ticket from a movie or concert or play or any event
matchbox or pack from a local restaurant
